A Rotarian who was involved with supporting the “EWE and YOU” young people’s farm project at Nash near Tenbury Wells has died suddenly.
The former president of Ludlow Rotary Club, Roger Jones, was 57. He died on Friday at the wheel of his car near Bucknell. Police said there were no other cars involved and no suspicious circumstances. It is believed he may have had a heart attack.
A former deputy headteacher, Mr Jones came to Ludlow with his wife Helen, also a teacher, in 1997. They had decided on a career change and became hoteliers at the Cliffe Hotel.
Tony Quint, president of Ludlow Rotary Club, said Mr Jones was well known for being a true Rotarian and an excellent host.
Mr Jones joined Ludlow Rotary Club in March 2000 and served as president in 2006/07. He concentrated particularly on programmes with schools and involving children of all ages.
“During his year as president, Roger took a special interest in Ewe and You at Tenbury. It is fitting that Helen has suggested that part of the collection to be taken at a service to celebrate his life should be donated to this charity.”
“He was a pillar of local society and a hard working member of Ludlow Rotary Club,” said current president Tony Quint.
He added:“I know I speak on behalf of all our members when I say that we have lost a great Rotarian but, most of all, a dear friend.”
As the Journal went to press arrangements were being made for a service at St. Laurence’s Church, Ludlow, in celebration of Mr Jones’ life.
