Runners put best foot forward

South Shropshire youngsters have been showing their rivals a clean pair of heels on the county cross country scene.

Bedstone Preparatory School girls stormed to another resounding victory with their Year 5 team leading the way in the Shropshire AA under-11 championships at Shrewsbury.

It was a double success with the girls also striding out for a gold medal after winning the Independent Schools Midlands cross country championships last month.

Meanwhile Connor Jones from Bishop’s Castle Primary School underlined his promise by leading the way in the Kingsland Grange School cross country event.

The youngster, who has just turned 11, won the boys’ Year 5/6 event in a time of nine minutes 38 seconds.

It was the first time that the Shrewsbury school’s new course had been used, meaning that Connor will go down as a record holder – a feat he will be hoping to hold onto  for several years.

The youngster, a keen local footballer, also helped the boys’ Year 5/6 team to finish third overall while the school also finished third in the relay event.

The girls’ Year 5/6 team also fared well in their event on what proved an excellent day for the school.

Meanwhile, the school’s Year 5/6 boys’ team produced a fine display to win the shield in the Shropshire AA  championships at Shrewsbury.

The cross country season continues with Bishop’s Castle School holding their schools development group event in early May.
