Volunteers celebrate repairs

The sum of £25,000 has now been spent on repairing flood damage to Ludlow’s Whitcliffe Common, especially around the Breadwalk area.

The Friends of the Common, a small group of volunteers who care for this premier beauty spot, are now facing 2008 with confidence, says chairman Alan Poulton.

“I can’t remember another period like the one last June and July,” he said. “We were originally in despair at the damage caused. It threatened to undo all the good work we had managed to achieve over a number of years.”

Grants were obtained and volunteers put in more than 1,000 unpaid hours to make up the £25,000.

On Easter Sunday from 2pm the Friends of Whitcliffe Common trustees will be at the Breadwalk, Dinham end, to talk about the work undertaken and discuss the next project – the revetment (retaining wall) of the riverbank.
