£800 boost for flood relief

sd2589613.jpgThe Tenbury Flood Relief Fund has just received an £800 donation from Teme Valley Conservatives.

Harriet Baldwin, the prospective parliamentary candidate for West Worcestershire, which will include Tenbury at the next general election, presented the cheque last week.

The flood relief fund, chaired by Chris Dovey, was set up in August by the Mayor of Tenbury, Councillor Bob Martin, and Malvern Hills District Councillor Phil Grove.

Eight months after last summer’s floods, the fund is still making payments to applicants and recently gave £2,400 to people still struggling with insurance companies or not yet able to return to life as normal before the floods.

Chris said: “The TFRF Committee, when they were first formed, believed that their services would be required for a year at the most, and had envisaged that by the present time they would be running down their task ready to close the fund in late spring 2008.

“This now seems to have been somewhat optimistic and the fund will remain open for some time yet. It is therefore particularly pleasing to find donations still coming in.”

The Tory hopeful visited Tenbury after the floods last year. After presenting the cheque to Mr Dovey she met people who had received help from the fund, including Frances Symonds and Ashley James.

Frances suffered considerable damage from a flash flood which caused torrents of water to flow down from Wheelers Orchard and the Crescent across Bromyard Road and through her home. Ashley, the window cleaner in Tenbury, suffered substantial loss of income due to many shops being closed for months after the flood waters subsided.
