‘Hoppers’ on their way for big day

More than 100 “groundhoppers” from around the country will be descending on two County League games tomorrow to sample south Shropshire football.

The football enthusiasts travel the length and breadth of the country, visiting new grounds and collecting memorabilia.

And tomorrow they will be the special visitors at Brown Clee’s clash at home to local rivals Craven Arms (kick-off 1pm) before going on to watch Clee Hill’s vital home encounter with Hopesgate United which kicks off later in the afternoon at 4pm.

The day has been organised by league secretary Mark McIntyre – and both clubs are looking to make it a big day out for their special guests.

Brown Clee’s first division clash with basement side Craven Arms will see the groundhoppers get a chance to buy special programmes.

The club will be printing special issues, with a run of around 250 expected to include pictures of past and present teams.

Being a lunchtime kick- off, food will be also be laid on along with raffles and other entertainment.

A special matchday programme will also be on sale as Clee Hill United entertain fellow strugglers Hopesgate in tomorrow’s crucial premier division clash at 4pm.

For the groundhopper day, Clee Hill also plan a golden goal competition, refreshments and other off-field attractions as well as their special programme to make it a day to remember for the club.

The fixture is very important to the south Shropshire side as they hope to get the point they need to ensure they remain in the premier division for next season following a post-Christmas revival.

“The committee will be in charge of things off the pitch which will hopefully raise some money for the club.

“But my job is to ensure that the 15 or 16 players have their minds on the game and that we can get the right result,” said manager Wayne Whitbread.
