Ludlow’s high hopes for newcomer

New allrounder Ali Raza is being backed to prove a big hit for Ludlow as the Marston’s Shropshire Premier Cricket League gets into full swing tomorrow.

The Burway side face a trip to Madeley and many eyes will be on their new professional Raza who faces the task of following in the footsteps of Australian Rob Hodgson. The Tasmanian was a key figure in Ludlow’s  resurgence with both bat and ball, with the south Shropshire men finishing second, second and fourth in his three seasons with the club.

The arrival of Raza marks a new era, with the Pakistani a highly-rated sportsman who has played hockey 79 times for his country while also featuring in two Olympics.

Ludlow chiefs have been impressed by Raza’s early contributions in the pre-season build-up, and he is already being lined up to open both the batting and bowling.

“Obviously we’re going to miss Rob’s wickets and his runs but we’re confident that Ali can do the business for us,” said vice-captain Alex Robinson.

“He is very friendly, has trained well and fitted in well with the team. He is a seam bowler, and the ball looks to be coming out well, while he has also been hitting the ball well in the nets.”

Steve Small will captain the first team, having led the second string last term.

The batsman has tasted success as captain of the seconds in the past, while he is no stranger to playing for the first team.

His vice-captain, batsman  Robinson, will miss the opener with an ankle injury but is hopeful of making his return the following week.

Experience

With a number of youngsters in the side, further experience will be provided by the return of spinner Pete Coote.

Robinson admits it is important the club make a good start as they look to set the scene for the  campaign.

“We finished fourth last year and we’ll be looking to keep building on that,” he said.“Although we’re still a very young side, the players are a year older now.

“Steve is an experienced captain and will be relishing the challenge. We want to start with a good result at Madeley tomorrow, which will put down a marker.”

The club, meanwhile, hold their race day on Sunday to coincide with Ludlow races, when they take on Kington in a friendly at the Burway.

The occasion will also be marked by the official opening of the club’s new scoreboard at noon.
