Ludlow seek swift riposte

Ludlow will look to bounce back from a losing start to their Marston’s Shropshire Premier Cricket League season when they take on visitors Albrighton tomorrow.

A young Burway side succumbed by 66 runs in their opener at Madeley, with a batting collapse their main cause for concern.

“There were positives, we bowled and fielded pretty well but we need to turn in a better performance with the bat,” admitted vice-captain Alex Robinson, who missed the game through injury.

“The wicket was damp and I think they adapted to the conditions better than we did. There is plenty of room for improvement but we’ve got a young side and it’s still early days.”

Chasing 136-9, Ludlow were dismissed for a paltry 70 in reply with 52-year-old Terry Owen taking 3-20. Ryan Lockley top scored with 17 and Jack Edwards made 16.

Earlier in the day, an unbeaten half century from John Fawcett rescued Madeley from a perilous 65-5.

Ali Raza, although later run out without scoring, snapped up 3-16 on his Ludlow debut.

Adam Williams bagged 2-18 and Pete Coote, on his comeback, made his mark with 2-44 to provide some hope for the season ahead. Edwards also claimed 1-13.

Madeley skipper Woodhall had words of consolation for Ludlow.

“I thought they performed well and when the wickets dry out they will score a lot of runs,” he said.

“Although we had to bat first on a wet wicket, I felt we had the better of the conditions because a few balls started to pop up as the wicket dried out.

“I was impressed with Ludlow. Steve Small captained them well, they have some good players and they took defeat on the chin.”

Tim Goldthorp, who hit 38 last Sunday in the five- wicket friendly win over Kington, is included in the first team against Albrighton tomorrow.

Robinson is likely to have a run-out for the seconds.
