A champion ‘just like dad’

South Shropshire has a brand new British champion – and he’s following in his father’s footsteps!

Last Sunday, Scott Moran, who runs Moran Motorhomes on Ludlow Business Park with his dad Roger, won the British Hill Climb Championship.

Roger Moran, who took up speed hill climbing in 1989, won the same British title in 1997.

Scott won the national title last weekend.

Points are awarded for each win and Scott was so far ahead that he’s been awarded the British title even though there are still three weekends of racing to take place!

The father and son who work together also share the same Gould GR61X racing car.

“Dad is very chuffed,” Scott said.

The 2007/ 2008 season was Scott’s seventh in speed hill climbing and he managed a second place nationally last year.

Talking exclusively to the Journal, Scott Moran said: “I’ve always loved cars.

“I’ve grown up following dad around, so it’s in my blood.

“I love the competition, the speed and the adrenaline rush. ’

“The social side is also great, there’s a nice family atmosphere.

“A lot of the competitors have known me for years.

“It’s like a big family, seeing most people every weekend.

“A lot of people get really flustered and don’t handle pressure very well but I tend to drive well in high-pressure situations.

“The hill climb courses are short, so I must be good at concentrating for short periods of time.”

Scott, age 32, said he would love to try his hand a at circuit racing but said it would be far to expensive.

So instead he is keen to defend his British Hill Climb Championship title and is looking forward to  the 2008/9 season.
