Ollie’s chance to impress Faldo

ollie.jpgRookie golfer Ollie Lewis is really making a name for himself – with his latest success taking him to Brazil.

The Ludlow ace, just 15, continued his success story by booking his place in the prestigious Nick Faldo golfing series final at the Costa Do Sauipe Golf Resort at the end of next month.

The event, which is hosted by Faldo himself, takes place on the Brazil course from October 25-31 with eight qualifiers from all over the UK competing against golfers from 15 other countries.

Lewis, a pupil at Ludlow School, earned his prized ticket by progressing through the East Midlands regional qualifiers.

He led the way over the two rounds at the Stapleford Park course in Nottingham and was also first overall in the following two rounds at the Notts Golf Club, Hollinwell.

That earned him a place in the regional finals at the Marriott Forest of Arden course in Warwickshire, battling it out with young golfers from all over the Midlands and East Anglia.

His four over par score was enough to earn second place to become one of eight players to be invited to Faldo’s top event in Brazil.

“The greens were difficult but Ollie was very determined to get through,” said his mother Mel Lewis. “He has taken it in his stride and is confident of doing well in Brazil, although I don’t think it has quite sunk in yet.”

Lewis’s ambitions are to earn a golfing scholarship to America and become a professional golfer.

It has been a tremendous season for the youngster who was crowned the South Wales Open junior champion and earned his ticket to play in the European Masters in Chantilly, France.

The county under-16 champion also represented Wales under-18s in the home internationals in Ireland while he embarks on the under-16 champion of champions event in mid-September.

Meanwhile, another Ludlow golfer, Ollie Farr, was this week looking to impress when making his bow for Wales in the four nations tournament at Muirfield. The three-day event started on Wednesday before concluding today (Friday).
