Club launch search for keeper

Ludlow Hockey Club are on the lookout for a new goalkeeper following the departure of Darren Dixon.

The keeper marked his last appearance with some fine saves as the south Shropshire side reached the final of the Shropshire Cup last weekend.

Dixon showed his worth in the fine victory over Bridgnorth and impressed despite suffering a hefty defeat to Telford in the final.

However, he now has to work at weekends, so the club are on the lookout for a new keeper ahead of their Midlands League campaign.

Last weekend they made their debut in the Shropshire Cup, contested by the three big teams in the county plus a fourth club. That club was Ludlow, a reflection of their good season last year and because, for the last two years, they had won the Shropshire Shield.

Their first opponents were Bridgnorth who have played in the Midland Premier  for many seasons and, despite being recently relegated, are still two leagues above the south Shropshire club.

Bridgnorth squandered some early chances but Ludlow began to believe that they could cause an upset, with their pacy forwards causing problems.

However it was not until late in the second half that Tom Aston and Matthew Hall combined for Hall to slot the ball home. A few anxious moments gave Dixon the opportunity to show his skill at saving penalty corners and give Ludlow a remarkable 1-0 victory.

This meant they had to face National League side Telford in the final. Exhausted from their semi-final, Ludlow were outplayed by an outstanding team, conceding 10 goals, with Dixon once again superb in goal.

Hall was also playing his last game for Ludlow before moving to Cardiff.

Training is at Bridge Street, Leominster, on Wednesdays at 8.15pm.
