Peacock Inn, Boraston

Good food and good beer - *The Peacock Inn, Boraston, is having a renaissance.

Landlord Martin Visser and front of house Heather Jones are now in charge, and are promising a fresh start for the pub. Martin told the Journal: “We are open again and are producing some good food, sourced from local suppliers.

“We’ve done quite a lot of work on the pub and are making it look nice, aiming to get The Peacock back to how it was a few years ago.”

Martin and Heather both swapped their careers in IT for the pub trade.

Martin said: “This is certainly not what I imagined we’d be doing. We were warned how much hard work it was, but it’s ten times more.

“However, there’s great satisfaction in making customers happy – that makes a difference from sitting behind a desk all day.”

A host of special events are also being held at the Peacock. Next up is a cocktail night tonight (Friday) and a quiz and curry night on October 13.

The Peacock is now serving food every day, and every evening apart from Sunday.

Already the Peacock’s traditional Sunday lun-ches, with a choice of at least two meats, have proved a hit with customers.

The menu sometimes features roast lamb, which was reared in a field literally just around the corner from the pub.

The bar menu contains a host of traditional food, mixed with some Indonesian dishes. Food is home-made whenever possible, with chicken pies and soups all made at the pub.

The restaurant has an ever-changing specials board. From Sunday to Thursday, places in the restaurant must be booked. On Fridays and Saturdays booking is advisable.

Martin added: “We don’t charge the earth but offer good food, and healthy food whenever possible.

“We have a small children’s menu, but also offer half portions of Sunday lunch. We don’t just offer kids chips with everything – for example we serve sausages with mash.”

Wines come from a local supplier, with a large range on offer, and a few cask ales are now being offered by the Peacock.

The Peacock, at Boraston, also has five unique en-suite rooms, some of which offer four poster beds and one with a 125- year-old rolltop bath.
