The recent decision not to allow a 10-pitch travellers’ site at Wheatcommon Lane near Woofferton must be looked at again by district councillors.
The Oakery site proposal will continue until at least November 6, when the full South Shropshire’s District Council meets finally to decide the planning application
On Wednesday, the council’s scrutiny committee met to decide whether earlier refusal of the planning permission by the development committee would leave SSDC likely to lose any appeal and pay significant costs.
Three families were at Wednesday’s meeting to argue the need for new pitches. Further families were identified living on car parks and lay-bys. The Wheatcommon Lane residents opposed to the plan were also represented.
After lengthy debate, Councillor Philip Morgan proposed that the previous refusal did not comply with council and government policy and the committee agreed.
“This was a complicated decision around the impact of the site on the community in the area. The site visit was a useful experience,” ,” said scrutiny chairman, Councillor Heather Kidd. “It showed the distances involved for the closest properties and the impact on their view.”
