Party-goers leave trail of destruction

A group of about ten young people wrecked havoc on a village near Presteigne, leaving a trial of destruction in their wake.

They went into gardens, broke and threw around solar powered garden lights, and uprooted and moved a large ‘For Sale’ sign which took four to carry it. They ripped up cottage sign posts, damaged others, and a number of large orange cones placed around roadworks for public safety were removed.

The incident happened between 1.45am and 4am last Saturday.

Police said local residents believe those responsible for the damage had attended a function at the nearby Norton Manor Hotel and were in the process of walking home.

One local resident who was awakened by noises later found that the lights around his pond had gone.

The man, who did not wish to be named for fear of reprisals, said the area then went quiet but later on he saw four boys carrying a large sign up the road. He said he did not go out because he was concerned about what might happen.

PC Bill Cowan of Dyfed Powys Police said: “Unfortunately these persons didn’t go straight home but remained in the area for over two hours.

“Although house-to-house enquiries have now been conducted in the village, anyone who saw these events and who may be able to identify those involved is asked to contact me at Knighton Police station. In fact, if you were one of this group and were appalled by your friends’ behaviour, please don’t be afraid to call.

“Sadly, although these events were witnessed, the police were not called. I would urge anyone who observes such behaviour to dial 999 immediately. It is far better to be called and prevent problems escalating than to attempt to pick up the pieces later in the morning.”

Police can now be called for non-emergencies using the new number 101 and local officers can be contacted using the e-mail address knightonnpt@dyfedpowys.pnn.police.uk
