‘Live’ shells alert on recycling sites

Detonators, marine flares and unexploded artillery shells have been dumped at various household waste and recycling centres across Powys in the last six months.

Police and armed forced disposal units have had to recover the items and dispose of them in an appropriate way and no-one was harmed.

But Powys County Council warn the situation could have been very different and residents should remember the potential consequences of such irresponsible behaviour.

They are urging people to act responsibly and not dispose of any potentially dangerous items at community recycling sites or household waste and recycling centres.

Councillor Ken Harris, Member for Waste and Sustainability told the  Journal: “Not only is disposing of these dangerous items in this way putting a large number of people at great risk, but the individuals responsible are breaking the law and could find themselves liable for prosecution under explosive and terrorism legislation.

“If anyone does have any potentially dangerous items they need to get rid off, the best thing to do is call the council’s waste management service on 0845 602 7035 who will be able to advise you on the appropriate and legal procedures for their disposal.”
