Dramatic week for Young Farmers

For the second year running, Llanbadarn Fynydd were the winners of the Radnorshire Federation of Young Farmers Clubs annual  Drama Competition.

Their production of The Red Balloon put them five points ahead of the other 11 Young Farmers Club entries in the week-long competition at the Albert Hall, Llandrindod Wells.

Producer James Powell received the John and Vivienne Hughes Rose Bowl, as well as the Martin Pugh MBE  Memorial Shield for the best producer of the week.

The trophies were presented by Kathy Brown, the community investment manager for Barclays Bank in Wales, which  had sponsored the event.

YFC Penybont

PICTURE: The play Entertaining the Troops won a third prize for Penybont Young Farmers Club in the Radnorshire Federation of YFCs’ annual drama competition. In costume are Evie Doman, Abby Simms, Kay Powell, Moti Alder and Joanna Griffin.

The Red Balloon also gained the Best Female Performance award of the Blodwen Griffiths Cup, which was won jointly by sisters Avril and Rebecca Hardwick for their parts in the production.

The Mr and Mrs R.H. Moseley Cup  for the best male performance was also won by  Marc Williams for his performance in the same production.

Second place was taken by Howey Young Farmers Club with their production of  A Dog’s Life, starring Rover a real life dog, who became the star of the show  on the stage.

Their producer, Mike Hammond received the Anna Goldsworthy Cup for the performance on behalf of Howey Club, and Lloyd Hammond  won the NFU shield for the best performance of a member 16 years and under, for his part as Larry Partridge, the dog owner.

Just one point behind  was  Knighton, with their production of Under Ffrydd Wood, written by Sarah Wilding. They were awarded the Knighton YFC Shield for their production.

Knighton members Matt Price, Cassidy Davies, Tom Lewis, Emma Bevan, Michaela Lewis and Liam Davies won the Estyn Meredith MBE Perpetual Trophy for the best sketch or group within a performance.

Matt Price also won the Simon Rees  Memorial Shield for the best performance by a member aged 17 to 21 years of age for his part as Kez.

The award for the highest placed club out of the six smallest clubs within the Federation went to Edw Valley Club for their production of The Last Train to Brecon.

They also won the Chris Woz Trophy for the best original script with this production.

Rhosgoch Young Farmers Club won The Hope Family Shield for the best costume of the week in their production of Keep Calm.

The Radnor Valley club took the Paul Elkington Trophy for Technical Merit for their production of  Inquest of a Child.

Individual awards were made by the FUW to the best male, best female, best 17-21 years and the best 16 years and under performances and these were presented on the night by David Powell of the Farmers Union of Wales.

All through the week, junior members of the Young Farmers Clubs also participated in the One Plus competition, which was won by the Rhosgoch B team of Stephanie Sweetingham and Richard Meredith with their production of Vickery’s Vets.

Richard Meredith was also awarded the Clair and Toby Powell Award for the Best Individual  Performance in the One Plus competition.

The runners up in this section, just one point behind were  Aberedw B with their entry of At the Doctors, which gained them second place. The group were made up of  Owen Eckley, Hannah Jones, Nathan Jones, Aeron Powell,  Reuben Powell and Marc Pugh.

In third place were  Penybont Young Farmers Club with their entry entitled Entertaining the Troops, produced by Evie Doman. The group comprised of  Evie Doman, Abby Simms, Kay Powell, Moti Alder and Joanna Griffin.

The adjudicators for the drama were Gareth and Mavis Gibbs and for the One Plus competition John Phillips and Gareth Davies.

The time-keeper was Christine Wozencraft and the stage time-keeper was Roger Abberley. The orgainising team of county officials were led by the county chairman, Jimmy Hughes.
