New homes spark council plan rift

A row has broken out in Knighton about when planning permission was given for three properties to be built and eight car parking spaces provided at the back of the Red Lion public house.

Councillor Sarah Scotford raised the issue at a town council meeting last week, saying work had started on site but she could not remember the council being informed.

She said the town council had recommended refusal of the plan in 2007 and they had heard nothing since, but nevertheless work had started and even some neighbours had not known about it.

“It is not the houses, although I do feel there will be repercussions with noise coming from the pub affecting the neighbours, but it’s the fact that we have not been told what is happening,” she said.

“We are not being treated fairly by Powys County Council. We are representing the people of Knighton and yet even our county councillor did not know this had been given permission. What is going on up there? Do they even realise that we exist?”

Councillor Derrick Price said the access to the site was dangerous. “There is no room for a visibility splay and every access has to have one of them. A woman almost got clipped there this week. There are also lots of elderly and disabled people going that way to the library. It is dangerous.”

Members agreed that the town clerk should write to Powys County Council and ask for a planning officer to come and explain when and why the decision to grant planning permission was taken.
