Newbridge set for crunch clash

Newbridge travel to Dolgellau in the Spar Mid Wales League tomorrow (Saturday) desperate for three points at the expense of their fellow strugglers in what can be termed a must win game.

Despite collecting just a solitary point since the turn of the year, the Villagers have turned in some improved performances of late. Dolgellau are finding it hard going in their debut campaign but will have taken confidence from their shock 2-1 success at Aberystwyth College last weekend.

Newbridge have to play Dolgellau twice and also meet Llanfyllin Town at home and a glance at the league table suggests they need to win all three and pick up other points elsewhere if they are to maintain their Spar Mid Wales League status.

Presteigne aim to maintain their challenge at the other end of the table but could face a testing afternoon when Dyffryn Banw visit Llanandras Park.

Banw are definitely one of the league’s in-form sides with just one defeat in their last 12.

Presteigne themselves have lost just two of their last 13 in the league and although currently ninth, are still very much in title contention in a congested top half of the table.

Nick Cadwallader continues to deputise for the injured Ian Havard while Tom Evans anmd Liam Jones are again included in the squad.

Player-manager Tom Broome, who has stressed the importance of every game from now until the end of the season, was this week hoping to complete the transfer of former Newtown midfielder Jack Keating from Ellesmere.

Rhayader Town, who continue to hold joint leadership of the table, also face a crunch game at home against Carno but will be without the suspended Callum McKenzie.

The midfielder was sent off in stoppage time at Penparcau a fortnight ago for what Rhayader thought was a second yellow card but he has received a three match ban which indicates it was a red.

Hay St Marys’ caretaker manager Fil Wisniewski should be boosted by the return of of Sam Powell but still has doubts over the fitness of Gavin Williams for tomorrow’s home encounter with new league leaders Penparcau.

The Saints recently progressed in the League Cup following a penalty shoot out at the end of extra-time at Penparcau which suggests it could be another close one tomorrow.

Hay will be aiming to make home advantage count as they still have 17 league games to play, only six at home. Hay’s midweek match against Rhayader Town was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
