‘Care farm’ is planned

A PLAN to build a ‘care farm’ on land at Bishop’s Castle Crowgate Business Park, as well as a mini anaerobic digester, is being put together by the town’s Wasteless Society.

Town councillor and Society member Neil Hird told the Journal  the proposal was briefly discussed at the Town Council’s Tuesday meeting.

He said: “Care farms can provide health, social and educational care services for one, or a range of, vulnerable groups of people.

“They can also be ideal educational and skill learning centres.”

The proposed care farm would be an organic market garden operation with paddocks for small animals and poultry and a tree and plant nursery.

The farm’s polytunnels could be heated by an on-site mini anaerobic digester.

The anaerobic digester could be fed by household kitchen waste and quality green garden waste from Bishop’s Castle’s 800 households, plus similar waste from the Community College, the primary school, the community hospital, care homes pubs and cafes.

The college and the primary school, are ideal  ‘markets’ for the proposed care farm’s organic produce.

A formal proposal for the care farm will be put to Bishop’s Castle Town Council at its next meeting, added Cllr Hird.
