Megan signs twinning Charter

The youngest person in Europe to sign an official European Twinning Charter is ten-year-old Megan Roberts, the Mayor of Knighton Junior Town Council.

Some 30 residents of Knighton and district visited the Canton of Varades last weekend, the area in France which Knighton and District is twinning with, which consists of six small towns each with their own Mayor.

Among the group were the chairman, secretary and members of the twinning committee, the Junior Town Mayor, and five members of Knighton Town Council including the Mayor and Deputy Mayor and Knighton Town Crier.

The twinning coincided with the 60th anniversary of the the Loire Wine Festival, at which Knighton Mayor Councillor Roger Bright and Junior Mayor Megan were involved in the cutting of the ribbon and also the planting of a commemorative 60th anniversary tree.

During the ceremony Councillor Bright had to make a speech, for which he had come prepared, but then the festival president unexpectedly handed the microphone to the Junior Mayor.

Councillor Bright told the Journal: “She was really brilliant. She did an outstanding job, speaking off the top of her head, nobody would have known she was just ten years old. I was very proud of Megan, in fact we all were.”
