No room for young musicians - at youth centre!

Llandrindod Wells Silver Band will not have a place at the town’s new multi-use youth facility – because it is only to be used by youth organisations, council bosses have said.

The band, which until recently had practised at the Drill Hall, believed that as users of the hall they would be given a new home at the facility, which is likely to be built at Llandrindod Wells High School.

But the group was contacted recently by a Powys County Council officer who told them they could not move to the new youth centre because it is for youth organisations only!

The council has said it will work with the band to find alternative accommodation for them.

The band, which plays at many town events including Armistice Day and at the town carnival, currently has about 20 members, including eight junior members.

It provides free  tuition for young members and enables anyone to have access to music as it can provide instruments on loan.

Band secretary Janice Baynham said: “We have been contacted by Powys County Council to tell us that the new building is for youth organisations only. As yet no alternative has been offered.

“We are meeting in the School Room, Ithon Road, which, although is adequate for the interim, does not provide enough flexibility to accommodate and encourage the junior band members, who ideally should be in another room.

“The town band is a huge asset to the town, providing accompaniment for many events as well as entertainment.

“Many young people have been nurtured by this band and have gone on to further their musical careers. We are providing for the youth of the town as well.”

The band contacted Llandrindod Wells town councillor Les Hope to help them and he got the item placed on the town council’s agenda at Tuesday’s meeting.

He said: “I am disgusted and appalled. This town band has been going for so long and encourages many young people to take up music. They lead the carnival and Armistice Day and they give concerts during Victorian Week, and this is the thanks they get. We must support them as much as we can.”

A spokesperson for Powys County Council said: “Council officers have informed Llandrindod Wells Silver Band that the new facility will only be used by youth organisations.

“However, we are working with the silver band to find alternative accommodation which could suit their needs.”
