A south Shropshire hairdresser, known affectionately as Mr Roy, is putting away his scissors and retiring after 32 years.
But customers at Shampers, Sandford Avenue, Church Stretton, need not worry. The business will be in the capable hands of Roy Mattey’s daughter, Fleur Pitts, who will take over from April 1.
Fleur will work alongside salon manager and head of in-house training Kelly Rigmey.
Roy, known as Mr Roy, will still be working at the salon for one day a week.
Mr Roy said: “Shampers is looking forward to a new future in the safe hands of Fleur and a dedicated team of 14. This is Shampers the new generation.”
Mr Roy had a career working and managing salons for Raymond in Cardiff, Colchester, Leicester and Birmingham. In 1978, Roy decided to return to his roots in Church Stretton.
Mr Roy opened Shampers with his wife and business partner Gill 32 years ago.
Since then the salon has grown into one of the largest in Shropshire.
Roy’s daughter Fleur started as the Saturday girl at Shampers and then decided to pursue a career in hairdressing. In 1986 she began training with Raymonds in New Street, Birmingham.
Fleur returned to Shampers in 1999, and became the salon director helping to run the salon from then until the present day.
Asked what was the secret of the salon’s success, Mr Roy said training. Jo Rowson and Heather Davies are the salon’s current trainers.
Three members of staff, Milly Banks, Miranda Pratt and Emma Price, are working towards their NVQ level II.
Mr Roy said: “Shampers has always been professional and friendly. We are all motivated to do artistic, modern and classic styling for our clientele.”
