A NEW NIGHTSPOT for young people – the first in Ludlow for nearly two decades – is the latest idea from the town’s Mayor Martin Taylor-Smith.
Ludlow’s last nightclub closed nearly 20 years ago and recent attempts by some local pubs to have late-night licenses have generally been opposed by town centre residents.
Councillor Taylor- Smith has said he is keen to hear suggestions from people as part of consultation on the plan being drawn up for Ludlow.
He said : “A nightspot is one of the things that we are generally trying to tackle. There does need to be something for younger people to do on a Friday and Saturday night.”
The consultation is open until the end of April and Councillor Taylor-Smith urged people to contact the town council with their views.
Buildings currently without a dedicated future use include the Labour Club and the former town council offices at the Buttercross, which Councillor Taylor-Smith said someone had suggested could be used as a youth club.
Paula Redway, director of Ludlow Assembly Rooms, which used to house the nightclub, known as “the sticky carpet”, said they were behind the idea.
“We used to run club nights here and they were successful, but when the Licensing Act changed in 2005 it became too expensive to afford the security required,” she explained. If anyone could find a way to make it work, we would definitely support them.”
