Kington take honours at golf championships

Kington Golf Club hosted the prestigious 36 hole Herefordshire Men’s County Championships on Saturday, June 5.

In perfect playing conditions - a course in superb condition and a warm and sunny day - some brilliant golf was played.

The eventual winner, with a magnificent 69 in the morning and another in the afternoon, was Kington’s own Alan Williams. He finished each round in fine style by having eagles on the 18th.

golf single 11Jon Devereux of The Herefordshire, the defending champion, gave a good account of himself and finished second with 142 (70/72).

Ross Moore, who has just graduated from the junior ranks at Kington, came in a very commendable and close third with 143 (73/70).

Several fine performances over 18 holes were achieved. Wyndham Evans (Kington) produced a level par round of 70 in the morning – no mean feat off a handicap of 8.

In the afternoon another Kington player, Graham Priday, made up for his morning round with an excellent 69.

However even that score was eclipsed by Greg Morgan (Belmont) with a phenomenal 66 which almost included a hole in one on the second, a 335 yard dog leg over the gully.

golf group 11The three-man team trophy went to Kington with Alan Williams (138) getting excellent support from Ross Moore (142) and Matthew Burgoyne (145).

The Kington club captain, Michael Stanley, presented the prizes.

Thanks are due to Messrs Parry and Maggs for organising the event so well and to the starter, Dave Haley, who ensured good discipline on the first tee.
