Adventure camp needs help

A south Shropshire adventure camp, set up 50 years ago, is enjoying its busiest years ever – but supporters fear the credit crunch could hamper plans to finish refurbishment work.

The Longmynd Adventure Camp (LMAC) has had its busiest half-year ever.

“It’s extremely heartening to see the camp being used by more groups of special needs children. Once our wheelchair path opens in early August we plan to welcome even more.” said president Don Rogers.

A massive £36,000 fundraising drive has reached the half way total. but  trustees still need to raise another £18,000 to complete the refurbishment of the camp’s mess hall.

Fundraising officer Kim March said:  “We would welcome any offer of support to help the charity complete its refurbishments – although we have reached the halfway stage quite quickly the second half could well be more challenging as the UK economy tightens and charitable giving declines even further. Our aim resolutely remains to complete Phase 2 this winter.”

The camp already accommodates more than 500 children a year and aims to double this number.

The Shropshire Masonic Charitable Association donated a £1,000. Shrewsbury based Salopian Lodge of Charity No 117 gifted £2,010 to mark their bicentenary, and the Millichope Foundation has pledged £2,500 over five years.
