The Friends of Ludlow Assembly Rooms is calling on all residents and supporters to rally round and help bring desperately-needed new ideas and energy to its efforts to keep the venue alive.
In June the arts centre announced that it needed to raise £100,000 to secure its future after a “difficult start to the year”.
Fundraising committee member Joan Birkett said: “ It would be fair to say the situation with the Friends fundraisers is desperate. We really need some new blood, some new ideas and preferably some younger people to come and join us. We run some really popular and successful events, but we are always on the lookout for new things to do – any ideas are welcome!
“We are also looking for people to take on and run specific events, such as the Moveable Feast – basically a three course dinner which you eat in three different houses. If you like organising, this would be a great project.”
Fundraising committee chair Cheryl Johnston is stepping down after four years and the search is on for a dynamic new leader. “We’re looking for a new chair as well as new members. But remember, you don’t have to join the committee to help us,” added Joan.
The LAR board has launched a campaign to raise £100,000. Two anonymous donors have promised to match every £1 donated up to £12,500. Fundraising events in May raised a further £1,500. Last year the Friends raised £20,000 and hope to match that in 2010.
An open meeting takes place at the Assembly Rooms on Monday, August 16 at 7.30pm. All are welcome. The committee is particularly keen to hear from people with new ideas to raise cash and those with the interest and enthusiasm to run events.
Friends run events throughout the year, including Ludlow Secret Gardens, the mega book sale, grand auction and the challenge walk.
They also run smaller events such as quizzes, lunches, jazz evenings and garden visits.
