Hall project appeal to town

THE renovation project for Bishop’s Castle Town Hall moves forward next Tuesday with the launch of ‘Target 250.’

The plan is to engage the town, and friends, in raising a local fund to match grants, such as that being sought from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Project officer, Evelyn Bowles, explained why 250 was a significant number. The year 2015 will mark the 250th anniversary of the estimated date (c.1765) for the building of this historic local landmark.

“One of the project’s main aims is to restore the fabric of the building to its original, sustainable construction, ensuring that it will grace the town for another 250 years,” added Evelyn.

“With two years’ development and grant-seeking work still to go on the project, we are looking for 250 individuals, businesses and other organisations who will each donate or fundraise £250.”

For the purpose of attracting grant funding   this would produce a fund of £62,500, a significant contribution to a total that will be in the order of £600,000.

If the project comes to fruition, work should be complete in time for a truly fitting celebration of the Town Hall’s 250th anniversary”

The Town Council has set up a dedicated account for the money. They have also undertaken that in the event that the major renovation project does not achieve the necessary grants, the money will be spent on work to improve the Town Hall, in accordance with preferences expressed in the public consultation in February 2010. The progress of the project and Target 250 can be followed on the Town Council pages of www.bishopscastle.co.uk

The search for fundraisers will begin at an evening event next Tuesday in the Church Barn at 7pm.

Anyone interested is urged to attend to view project proposals, enjoy some light refreshments and music, and meet other supporters of the project and swap fundraising ideas.
