Family’s tribute to tragic Leanne

Family and friends of a 10-year-old girl who was killed in a road accident, held a memorial night to mark 10 years since the accident and to raise money for Wales Air Ambulance.

Leanne Corbett was a back seat passenger in her family’s car when she was killed in a road accident at the Storey Arms near Brecon in September 1999.

Her mother and father were also injured in the crash but her younger brother Brett escaped injury altogether.leanne30

To mark the 10th anniversary of the accident, Leanne’s mother Helen Griffiths organised a memorial night at Rumours Nightclub in Llandrindod Wells for family and Leanne’s friends.

“So many of her friends still live in the area, many are now at university, and they had been asking about Leanne and talking about her during the last year, so I decided to organise this memorial night as a bit of a reunion for them, too.

“We had a disco, a raffle and a rodeo bull people paid to go on, and the Wales Air Ambulance came and did a talk and quizzes. I also set up a memorial book for them to look at photographs of Leanne and themselves at the time, and we had a video of one of Leanne’s birthday parties, which some of them were in.

“Fun was had knowing Leanne would have been watching us all.”

Mrs Griffiths said family and friends had also completed a seven or eight mile sponsored walk around Llandrindod Wells in aid of the air ambulance.

The money raised totalled £883, which was donated to Wales Air Ambulance at the Air Base in Welshpool.

Helen added: “Sadly Wales Air Ambulance was not around when we needed them and perhaps things may have been different if it had have been, who knows.

“You never know if we may need them again and we hope they will be around for good.

“This is such a good organisation and very worthy of our support and we are very pleased to be able to donate this money to their life-saving charity.”
