‘Royalty’ to star at Victorian festival

The 29th Llandrindod Wells Victorian Festival will officially open tomorrow (Saturday) with nine days of entertainment and activities, which will take young and young-at-heart back to a bygone age.

Breaking with tradition this year, the opening will not take place until 4pm even though the festivities begin at 12 noon.

But her Majesty Queen Victoria will be arriving by royal train at Llandrindod Wells station where she will be greeted by her adoring subjects.

Members of the town band will then escort her in a procession through Middleton Street to the Bandstand on Temple Gardens for the opening ceremony at 4pm, which will be conducted by the Chairman of Powys County Council, Councillor Garry Banks.

Far from being a peaceful Victorian Sunday, there will be a right royal rumpus in town at 11am on Sunday when town criers from across the country parade through the town and take part in the Llandrindod Wells Town Crier Competition.

Later in the afternoon the Mr and Mrs, Miss and Master Llandrindod Wells will be chosen before a grand costume parade at 2pm.

Later in the week the historic vintage vehicle display will take place on Powys County Council car park from 10am until 5pm on August 28. It will include a grand parade led by a steam engine around the town at 12.30pm.

Daily events on the green around the town’s bandstand and many other activities will help to keep locals and visitors alike entertained.

The nine-day festival will end in spectacular style with a grand torchlight procession from the Llanerch Inn upto the Lake, in time for the wonderful firework display, which will start at 9.30pm on August 29, and be followed by the grand raffle draw.
