A 41-year-old woman from Llanwrtyd Wells died after a large bale of hay became dislodged and fell on top of her.
Meirwen Caryl Davies, died at her home at Plas Y Cadno, Beulah Road, last Friday at about 11.20am. She had been helping her husband on the farm when the accident happened in an outbuilding.
A spokeswoman for Dyfed Powys Police said Mr Davies found his wife with the bale of hay on top of her.
Mrs Davies was heavily involved with Llanwrtyd Wells Show and the show committee held an emergency meeting on Friday night to determine whether to go ahead with the event the following day.
At the show, which did go ahead, a two-minute silence was observed in memory of Mrs Davies, who was a strong supporter of the handicraft section.
Emergency crews from the Welsh Ambulance Service and Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service’s first responder attended at the farm and tried to resuscitate Mrs Davies, but she died at the scene.
A spokeswoman for Dyfed Powys Police said: “There are no suspicious circumstances, it seems to have been a very tragic accident. The husband appears to have found his wife with the bale of hay on top of her.”
A spokesman for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “Our first responder attended the scene after receiving a call from the ambulance service. The report was of a female in cardiac arrest.”
“We attended a call at the location and sent an ambulance and a local fire service responder and we worked on the patient but we did not transport anyone to hospital,” he added.
Powys’s coroner was informed of Mrs Davies’ death and an inquest was opened on Monday.
The medical cause of death is suspected to be asphyxia but the inquest was adjourned to await further reports.
The Health and Safety Executive confirmed they are investigating the incident.
A spokeswoman said: “HSE are aware of the incident and are making further enquiries at this stage.”
Llanwrtyd Wells county councillor Colonel Tim Van Rees said the tragic accident had shocked everyone in the village and the community’s thoughts were with the Davies family.
Colonel Van Rees said: “I understand Mrs Davies was helping her husband with the farming and this bale of hay became dislodged and fell on her.
“She was a most charming lady, very heavily involved with the show. She was a very popular and well-liked lady and the thoughts and prayers of the community are very much with Mr Davies and the family.”
