£3.9m school gets go-ahead

Shropshire councillors have given the go-ahead for a £3.9m new school at Ashford Carbonell.

Shropshire Council will build the school and it will replace the Bishop Hooper School at Caynham, formed when Ashford Carbonell and Caynham primary schools merged in 2009.

The school will provide larger, improved facilities for   pupils and staff. The present school opened in September 2009 after the amalgamation of Caynham and Ashford Carbonell primary schools and is currently at the old Caynham Primary School site.

The scheme for the new school, on the northern edge of Ashford Carbonell, includes: four classes, a grass sports pitch and all-weather multi-games area, a small amphitheatre for outdoor drama and performance and a garden, wildflower meadow and orchard. The new school incorporates the privately run Butterflies nursery.

Headteacher of Bishop Hooper Primary School, Kerri Phelps, said: “The prospect of a new school building is very exciting, and I can’t wait to see work start on site.

“I am delighted that the planning committee approved the design. Pupils, staff, parents and the local community have all contributed their ideas to make the new school special.”

Martin Taylor-Smith, Shropshire Councillor for Ludlow South said: “I am delighted that this scheme is moving forward and will offer a modern and exciting learning environment to bring out the best in pupils.”
