Local bowlers triumph

Local bowlers excelled at the Welsh women’s outdoor bowls finals day with a host of success stories for the region at Vivian Park, Port Talbot.

Llandrindod’s Wendy Price emerged as the new champion after beating Ann Lewis of Saundersfoot 21-9 in the final, having earlier edged out Jackie Jones from Tridwr in the semis.

Price then teamed up with Betty Morgan MBE to beat Lewis & Jones of Talgarth 17-15 in the final of the ladies’ pairs. They had earlier seen off Evans & Smith from Carmarthen in the semis and Presteigne duo Joanna Weale and Rhiannon Weale in the section final.

In the ladies’ rink final, Morgan, Price, Jess Williams and Natalie Phillips accounted for the four of G. Miles and team mates from Cardiff 24-8 in the final to become champions.

In the under-16 singles, Rhiannon Weale, daughter of Robert, beat Rebecca Williams 21-8, and the two young bowlers then teamed up in the under-25 pairs but lost out to Natalie Phillips of Llandrindod and Ysie White of Tenby in the final.

In the semi finals of the under-25 singles, Jessica Williams (Landrindod) lost to Lauren Selway( Tridwr), the latter losing to well known Welsh international Kelly Packwood in the final.

Kathy Pearce and team mates from Berriew were beaten in the semi finals of the triples by Ann Lewis’ threesome of Saundersfoot.

Meanwhile at the recent 2010 National Mixed Pairs Competition, over 100 pairs entered the tournament, with the semi finals and final producing three high quality matches.

The winners were Robert Weale and his daughter Rhiannon from Presteigne who lifted the title by defeating Lee Daniels and Laura Thomas of West Glamorgan in the final.

In the semi final featuring two Welsh skips in Robert and Jonathan Thomas, whose partner was Kerry Packwood, the match was tied at 20 shots all after 21 ends, but Robert and his daughter won by two shots on the extra end. The Presteigne pair had earlier beaten Barry and Betty Fleming of Machynlleth 30-12 in the area final.

Robert Weale has now won the title with three different partners and said he was “very proud” to triumph with his daughter.
