SUPPORTERS of the Sylvester Horne Institute in Church Stretton suffered a setback this month when their bid for cash was turned down by Shropshire Council
Volunteers were looking for £50,000 towards a proposed renovation programme which includes a new extension and heating system.
“However, we soldier on with the invaluable help of our regeneration officer, looking for alternative sources of funding,” said Tom Beaumont, chairman of the Silvester Horne Community Project Partnership.
To help boost funds the partnership is now staging a series of “Local Creative Enterprise” events. The first will be held on Saturday, October 9, at the institute, between 11 am and 4.30pm.
Its main aim is to raise awareness of the plans to upgrade and restore Silvester Horne to meet the needs of the modern community.
It will provide an opportunity for residents to put forward ideas and suggestions for the future use of the building, or to offer assistance with the task of fundraising.
Several local artists will display and sell their work, and other interesting exhibits are planned. A leading member of the partnership, Tony Crowe, will be holding a special book sale.
The WI has also offered to serve teas, coffees, drinks and snacks throughout the event.
“We are hoping that the event will be supported by as many residents and visitors as possible, and urge everyone to come along and enjoy the interesting and varied exhibits,” added Mr Beaumont.
