Ludlow Cricket Club look to sign overseas star.

LUDLOW’s hopes of bringing influential Australian paceman Chris Elliott back to the club for a second summer have been dashed – but the Burway club are eyeing a like-for-like overseas replacement.

Elliott, a quick bowler who is also a useful batsman, helped transform Ludlow’s fortunes in the Shropshire Cricket League premier division after switching from Whitchurch midway through last season.

He had hoped to return this summer, but work commitments mean he will have to stay in Australia, alth-ough he is determined to play for the south Shropshire club the following summer.

“Chris has a great attitude and steams in to bowl every time so he will be missed,” said Ludlow’s captain Bryn Simmons.

“He is a little bit quicker than what we’ve got, has a terrific demeanour, and was keen to come back.

“However, he can’t get the time off work, but will save up his holidays so that he can come back the following year. In the meantime we’re looking for a pro for this summer, a similar player to Chris. We have made a few enquiries, and the sooner we can get one sorted out the better.”

Ludlow have been in touch with Elliott’s club in Australia about the possibility of sending over a player, while they are also looking at recruits from South Africa. Having ended the Shropshire League premier division season with a fourth place finish, the Burway club will be starting their preparations for the forthcoming season on Sunday with net sessions at Church Stretton Leisure Centre.

Simmons, the former Corvedale wicketkeeper, is appealing for new players, young and old to come to the winter nets.

“Everyone’s welcome,” he said. “Any player wanting to play cricket for Ludlow is welcome to come along.”

The indoor nets will be taking place from 10am to noon at Church Stretton Leisure Centre, and will run for 10 weeks.

Simmons is in his second season at Ludlow, and has taken over the reins this season from Louis Watkins, who is spending the summer in Australia.
